A Uniform Resource Locator (URL) is a unique address that points to a specific resource on the internet, such as a webpage, image, or document. Often called a "web address," it tells a browser how and where to find the requested resource.

How a URL function

When you enter a URL into your web browser, it initiates a series of events:

  1. Request sent: Your browser sends a request to a Domain Name System (DNS) server, which acts like a phone book for the internet.
  2. IP address lookup: The DNS server looks up the domain name (e.g., google.com) and translates it into the server's unique Internet Protocol (IP) address (e.g., 74.125.224.72).
  3. Request to server: The browser sends the request to the server at that specific IP address.
  4. Content delivered: The server processes the request and sends the requested files back to your browser, which then displays the webpage on your screen.

components of a URL

A URL is made up of several distinct components:

  1. Scheme (or protocol): This is the first part, like https://, which tells the browser the protocol to use for accessing the resource. HTTPS is the secure, modern standard. Other examples include ftp:// for file transfers and mailto: for email.
  2. Subdomain: A subdivision of the main domain, such as www or blog. Subdomains are used to organize website content, with www being the most common.
  3. Domain name: The name of the website, like example.com. It is often chosen to be memorable and is followed by a top-level domain (TLD).
  4. Top-Level Domain (TLD): The extension at the end of the domain name, such as .com, .org, or .net. It helps classify websites and can also be country-specific, like .uk.
  5. Path: The part of the URL after the TLD that directs the browser to a specific folder or file on the web server. For example, in /products/item123, the path guides you to a specific item page.
  6. Query parameters: An optional part preceded by a question mark (?). It passes additional information to the server, often to filter or sort data. For example, ?category=shoes&color=black.
  7. Anchor: An optional component preceded by a hash (#). It directs the browser to a specific section within a page, like a bookmark.
